Say no to the promotion

He booked a single two-hour reading because the answer was due on the Friday. We put the offer on paper as it actually stood: the title, the money, the eleven people, and the four evenings a week it would quietly take. Then we put beside it the thing he had not said out loud, which was that he liked the work he was already doing and had never once wanted to stop doing it. He said no on the Thursday and was asked to explain himself twice, which he had practiced.
